Posted by Michelle Oliviera on Dec 7th 2023
When buying iced out jewelry we are faced we many choices!
Diamonds, moissanite, cz, lab diamonds, CVD diamonds, gemstones, semi precious stones, and so so much more!
Especially in hip hop jewelry the biggest contestants are moissanite & diamonds. We all loved iced out pendants, tennis chains, rings, or cuban link chains! Should we spend more money and get diamonds or save money and get moissanite?
Lets take a look at the pros and cons of these two stones!
Moissanite:
Pros:
- Affordability: Moissanite is generally more budget-friendly than diamonds, allowing for larger and more elaborate designs without breaking the bank.
- Brilliance: Exhibits a high refractive index, resulting in exceptional brilliance and a fiery play of light that some find even more appealing than diamonds.
- Ethical Sourcing: As a lab-created gemstone, moissanite eliminates concerns related to the ethical and environmental impact of diamond mining.
- Color Variety: Naturally occurring moissanite can exhibit a range of colors, offering unique options beyond the traditional colorless stones.
- Environmental Impact: The lab-created process typically has a lower environmental impact compared to diamond mining.
Cons:
- Durability: While still quite durable, moissanite is slightly softer than diamonds, making it more prone to abrasions over time.
- Perceived Value: Some individuals may place a higher value on the rarity and traditional nature of diamonds, leading to a perception that moissanite is a "lesser" gemstone.
- Limited Tradition: Diamonds have a long history as a symbol of commitment, and some may prefer the tradition associated with diamond engagement rings
Diamond:
Pros:
- Exceptional Hardness: Diamonds are one of the hardest substances on Earth, making them highly resistant to scratching and suitable for everyday wear.
- Timeless Appeal: Diamonds have a long history as symbols of love and commitment, contributing to their enduring popularity.
- Market Value: Diamonds are considered valuable and can retain or appreciate in value over time, making them a potential investment.
- Cultural Significance: Diamonds are deeply ingrained in cultural traditions, especially in the context of engagement and wedding rings.
Cons:
- Price: Diamonds, especially those of high quality and larger carat weights, can be significantly more expensive than moissanite.
- Ethical Concerns: Diamonds have faced ethical concerns related to conflict or "blood" diamonds, although efforts like the Kimberley Process aim to address these issues.
- Environmental Impact: Diamond mining has environmental implications, including habitat disruption and the release of greenhouse gases.
- Limited Size Options: Budget constraints may limit the size of a diamond within a given price range, whereas moissanite allows for larger stones at a more affordable cost.
Choosing between moissanite and diamond ultimately comes down to personal preferences, values, and priorities. Each gemstone has its own set of advantages and considerations, allowing individuals to make a choice that aligns with their aesthetic preferences, budget, and ethical concerns.
